Hewitt furious at Davis Cup drug testing

Never one to take a loss lightly, Lleyton Hewitt was feeling more aggrieved than usual after his Davis Cup defeat due to what he considered a “ridiculous” drug testing situation.

Hewitt blasted the International Tennis Federation (ITF) after the second day of the World Group tie against France in La Roche sur Yon over what he said was poorly-timed and excessive doping control.

The Australian veteran was delayed to his post-match press conference by more than two hours and, when he finally arrived, he revealed his disgust at the situation.

“To have to hang around here for three hours after the match and keep all you guys waiting and us waiting, it’s mind boggling,” Hewitt said.

“I’ve never had to to do it like this in my life.

“I’ve done a few in my time but I’ve never had to go (urinate) three or four times and keep going all night.”

While France’s players were also put through testing, Hewitt questioned the timing with a day still to play.

He also said youngsters Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis had to take tests just before he went on court with Chris Guccione for Saturday’s doubles.

“They weren’t allowed to watch the start of the match which is just a joke as well,” Hewitt said.

“The ITF have to take a good look at things. It’s ridiculous.”

Australian captain Pat Rafter added: “It would be interesting if there was a live rubber tomorrow.”

The cagey Hewitt was certainly in no mood to answer questions about his future.

Hewitt has indicated he will play on for at least the rest of this year but asked whether he definitely intended to be part of the World Group playoffs in September he answered sarcastically: “Oh no, that’s it now, I’m not playing again.”

Rafter intervened: “I was interested in that question too …. You’ll be there.”

“Oh will I?” Hewitt said.

Hewitt also fired a sarcastic answer at a television reporter asking about whether there were positives for the future in Australia’s loss to France.

“Oh no, it looks terrible, the future,” Hewitt said.
