In the news:

Like most people, trainer Gerald Ryan believed Red Excitement had been beaten by Kinnersley at Randwick on Saturday.

That belief was reinforced when Kinnersley was put up on television as the winner after a misplaced camera showed that to be the case.

In fact the result was a dead heat as confirmed by the judge and stewards who have told the Australian Racing Club to move the camera.

After they declared the dead heat, stewards became aware the shot showing Kinnersley as the winner on closed-circuit televison was from a camera that was not positioned on the finish line and that the wrong result had been broadcast.

Ryan was watching the race from Melbourne and was unaware of the drama but pleased enough with Red Excitement’s performance to start making plans for a step up in grade and distance.

“I thought he had just missed when I first saw it,” Ryan said.

“And then of course when I saw the next shot I knew, but then it changed.

“He is going so well but I think he might be looking for further now so I might step him up to 1900 metres in the Parramatta Cup in three weeks.

“The Canberra Cup is eight days after that and that would be a good race for him if he shows he wants the distance.”

The Listed Parramatta Cup is at Rosehill on March 1 while the Listed Canberra Cup (2000m) is on March 9 as part of Black Opal Stakes day.

Canberra would be a homecoming for Red Excitement who was in Neville Layt’s stable as a young horse and ran midfield in Epaulette’s 2012 Black Opal.

The gelding has now won three in a row this preparation after kicking it off with a second and a third.

“He is in such great form at the moment,” Ryan said.

“He is abig strong horse and has a wonderful stride and it’s great to see him put three together.”
