Henriques ready if Test call comes

Moises Henriques isn’t expecting a recall to the Australian Test side.

But should national selectors settle on a like-for-like replacement for injured allrounder Shane Watson, the 27-year-old feels ready to deliver in the opening Test against South Africa starting on Wednesday.

“To come into a team that’s had so much success over the last three or four months would be brilliant, but with that success comes the responsibility of continuing that success,” Henriques told AAP.

“Especially against a team like South Africa.

“But I know I wouldn’t be here if they didn’t think I was good enough, and I believe I am as well.

“I’m ready to go if I’m tapped on the shoulder, and I feel like these conditions would suit my bowling.”

Henriques is locked in a selection battle with good friend Phillip Hughes, Shaun Marsh and Alex Doolan.

Henriques said he would be just as happy if Hughes, Marsh or Doolan prospered at his expense, such is the culture coach Darren Lehmann has entrenched in the squad.

“That’s the type of environment that we have here, everyone’s close,” said Henriques, who made his Test debut on Australia’s disastrous tour of India last year.

“Whoever gets the tap on the shoulder. You actually wish him the best, and you genuinely mean it.

“It’s a family environment that Boof has created.

“Whoever does play, I’m just going to be hoping they do the job and we win the first Test.”

Henriques was called into the 15-man squad for South Africa when James Faulkner succumbed to a knee injury on the eve of the tour.

He received a glowing endorsement from wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, who has skippered him in both the Sheffield Shield and Big Bash League.

“He got a lot of confidence in this arena with what he did in India,” Haddin said.

“He went through some ups and downs there.

“He’s gone back (to state cricket) and he’s been good ever since.”
