Sydney FC buzzing after Adelaide win

Sydney FC youngster Joel Chianese says the Sky Blues are buzzing after scoring consecutive A-League wins but admits they must improve in front of goal if they are to give the competition a shake.

The 22-year-old celebrated his first A-League goal when he slotted home a first-half volley in the 2-1 win over Adelaide at Hindmarsh Stadium on Sunday night.

Sydney snatched the victory in the dying stages through a brilliant goal from 19-year-old substitute Mitchell Mallia to move them into sixth place on the ladder.

While Chianese said the win gave Sydney a huge boost in confidence, the team was under no illusions after the victory.

“It was a great performance to get three points but there’s plenty of room for improvement,” Chianese said.

“We’ve got to take our chances. If we can be more affective in the front third, then we can finish teams off earlier and not be under so much pressure like we were last night.

“On a personal note, though, it was great to score my first goal but none of us can sit back now and think it’s going to be easy. We can’t afford to back off – we have to keep working hard.

“The finals are still a little way off … we’ve got to get there first but, if we can, I think we’ve got the squad and players to give it a real shake. The club is really positive at the moment.”

Sydney face fourth-placed Wellington at the SFS on Saturday night.
