NSW all-rounder Moises Henriques has hit a century in the “most important game of his career” to deliver Western Australia a crushing blow in the Sheffield Shield final in Canberra.
Henriques (112 not out) crafted his third first-class century on Saturday to put NSW in the commanding position of 8-393 at tea on the second day.
The Blues have piled on 151 runs in the first two sessions of day two for the loss of just two wickets at Manuka Oval.
It puts NSW in the driver’s seat for their first Shield title since 2008 as they only require a draw, while the Warriors are contesting their first Shield final in 15 years.
After the Blues lost 5-25 late on day one, Henriques dug in and received great support from fellow all-rounder Stephen O’Keefe to pile on a seventh-wicket stand of 90.
The partnership came undone with O’Keefe on 41 when left-arm WA paceman Jason Behrendorff (4-72) got a tight lbw decision to fall his way.
Tailender Trent Copeland played a strong support role before he was caught behind for 35, and Aussie Test spinner Nathan Lyon remains unbeaten on 10.
On the eve of the match, Henriques declared the Sheffield Shield final was the biggest game of his career – which includes three Tests and limited-overs matches for Australia.
He brought up his century off 260 balls over 319 minutes, punching 10 fours along the way.
NSW skipper Steve Smith (75) and opener Ryan Carters (72) laid the early groundwork for the Blues, but were undone by Behrendorff and Michael Hogan (3-78) after the Warriors got the ball to reverse swing at about the 60-over mark on day one.
But the Warriors have lacked penetration in all other periods over the two days, with their key strike weapon Nathan Coulter-Nile in Bangladesh for the Twenty20 World Cup.
