Pago Pago Stakes 2014: Tetsuko and Aerobar on trial for Slipper

Errant colt Time For War can renew his carnival hopes in the Pago Pago Stakes but the Golden Slipper is out of play.

Time For War left his Slipper hopes in the Randwick straight when he broke free of his handlers after being backed out of the barriers before the Skyline Stakes and did a lap of the course.

He was sent back to the barrier trials and pleased trainer Gerald Ryan with his second to Oakleigh Girl last Friday.

The Pago Pago is one of two Golden Slipper qualifying races at Rosehill on Saturday, the other being the Magic Night for fillies.

“I was very happy with his trial and I think he went as well as the winner,” Ryan said.

“But he is behind in terms of getting to the Slipper and I think the Sires’ Produce is more realistic.

“He missed a barrier trial due to rain and then missed the race so he is behind.”

Ryan has trained nine individual two-year-old winners this season but has just one confirmed Slipper runner – Believe Yourself who won the Sweet Embrace Stakes on March 15, the same day Time For War misbehaved.

Aerobar and Tetsuko are among Ryan’s runners in the Magic Night and a win by either filly will cement a berth in the $3.5 million Slipper a week later.

“If Tetsuko happened to win she would go to the Slipper,” Ryan said.

“The same applies to Aerobar. Obviously they both can’t win so we’ll see what happens.

“Aerobar has run third twice on slow tracks so if it is wet as they predict then she should go well.”

Tetsuko has had three starts for a win and two places including a third to Believe Yourself in the Sweet Embrace.

Ryan’s other Magic Night runner is Peggy Jean whose mission is the $1 million Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 12.
