Cassidy poised to keep wins rolling

Few are riding better than the irrepressible Jim Cassidy who has another quality book of mounts at Rosehill on Saturday.

The grand slam-winning hoop was the toast of Warwick Farm last weekend, turning in dashing rides aboard the John O’Shea-trained pair of Steps In Time and Sea Siren to land a stakes double.

He might be among the elder statesmen in the jockeys’ room but Cassidy’s form in recent months has been first class.

“I think I’m riding as good as ever to be honest,” Cassidy said.

“Things are are going well.

“It all comes back to opportunities. If you get the opportunities you’ve got to make the most of it.

“When you’re hot you’re hot and when you’re not, you’re not. It’s pretty simple.

“While you’re hot you’ve got to keep things rolling, especially coming into the carnival.”

Cassidy plans to do just that at Rosehill where he has a full book of eight rides including two for Chris Waller.

He will partner Danleigh for the premier trainer in the Group Two Apollo Stakes (1400m) and former French galloper Merchandise in the North Ryde RSL Club Handicap (1800m).

One of Waller’s band of imports, Merchandise has won three of his eight starts since coming to Australia.

Cassidy was aboard for the five-year-old’s most recent victory at Randwick in November and believes Merchandise can measure up to some of the better staying races this autumn.

“I like this horse. I think he shows nice staying potential and I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up in something like a Sydney Cup,” Cassidy said.

“He’s probably going to need another run but once he gets up to a more suitable distance I’m sure he’ll be competitive with some of the better ones around.”

Cassidy will once again join forces with O’Shea on Saturday, this time with unraced two-year-old Ashokan.

The colt has finished third in two recent trials and has drawn well in barrier three.

“I’m happy to be on the way the (O’Shea) team is going,” Cassidy said.

“I saw his trial the other day and he trialled nicely.”

Gai Waterhouse has also snapped up Cassidy’s services for Desert War’s half-brother Laser Hawk.

The gelding scored consecutive provincial wins in the spring and in a pointer to the stable’s regard for him, he is among entries for the Group One BMW.

“He’s a lovely big horse,” Cassidy said.

“He’s two from two and he’s in a nice race Saturday.”

Cassidy’s other mounts include the Rick Worthington-trained Sainthood in the Group Three Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) and Happy Hippy for Patinack Farm in the Listed Triscay Stakes.
