Injured Krygios withdraws from Tallahassee

Back-to-back title wins have taken their toll on rising Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios, injury forcing the teenager to withdraw from this week’s ATP Challenger event in Florida.

The 19-year-old has surged to a career-high world No.152 on the ATP rankings following his victory over American Jack Sock in the final of the Savannah Challenger in Georgia.

It was his 10th consecutive match win after triumphing at the Sarasota Challenger a week earlier.

Kyrgios’ success on the green clay in America’s south east marks a remarkable comeback for the youngster, who had been sidelined for six weeks with an elbow injury.

But the Canberran on Tuesday opted to pull out of contesting a third straight event, the Tallahassee Challenger, to recover from an abductor strain suffered in the Savannah final.

“It’s unfortunate,” said Kyrgios, who has slashed 70 places off his ranking in the past fortnight.

“I’ve had a really good couple of weeks playing well and I was really excited to play here.

“I’ll be hanging out and watching the tournament for the next couple of days.

“I want to get healthy again for the French Open.

“I’m just going to relax a bit and get to the gym if I can. There are a couple of Aussies playing, so I’ll get behind them.”

Kyrgios is on track to earn a wildcard for next month’s French Open and return to the stage where he upended former world No.8 Radek Stepanek in straight sets on debut last year.

Fellow teen star Thanasi Kokkinakis, Jason Kubler and Ryan Agar are all slated to play at the Tallahassee event, which starts on Tuesday.
