Brazil’s odds crunched to win World Cup 2014

With less than 24 hours to go until the start of the World Cup punters are going nuts, Brazil nuts that is, with more money bet on the home team to win the Cup with online bookmaker sportsbet than every other country put together.

Starting as the $3.90 favourites, Brazil have also clearly been the best backed team to win their first game, with over $200,000 bet on Brazil to beat Croatia in game one at $1.33.

In other interesting World Cup betting trends:

  • Biggest tournament bet – The biggest bet on the World Cup to date has been a $75,000 bet on Brazil to win at $3.90.
  • Biggest match bet – Another punter is very confident the home team will get an early win, betting $20,000 that Brazil will beat Croatia in game 1 at $1.33.
  • Most bets – The Australia v Chile match has received more bets on it than any other match.
  • Safest bet – Brazil are considered the safest bet of the early games, the shortest price of any team at $1.33. Their opponents, Croatia, are the biggest outsiders at $11 along with Honduras.
  • No interest – While there is plenty of early money for Brazil the same can’t be said for Algeria. They are the least backed team of the first games, with only $75 bet on them in total.
  • Tightest match – The England v Italy game looks to be the toughest game with England $3.00, the draw $3.00 and Italy $2.75. The money is virtually even across the three options.
  • Strangest bets – One punter has put $50 on Honduras to win at $3001 (would collect over $150k) and another has put $100 on Algeria at $2001 (would collect over $200k)
  • Top goalscorer – Lionel Messi is the $7.50 favourite to be the top goalscorer, but Neymar is the best backed at $10. One punter has bet $5,000 on him.
  • Aussie hope? – Tim Cahill is our best chance to be the top goalscorer at $251, but there has only been $34 bet on him.

“Aussie punters are backing the green and gold, but unfortunately we are talking about Brazil, not Australia! They have been the best backed team to win the tournament and to win their first game. Fingers crossed for punters they get the job done against Croatia and give punters an early collect,” said sportsbet.com.au’s Shaun Anderson.
