Monfries tight-lipped ahead of AFL clash

The speculation surrounding Angus Monfries is a rare distraction in a so-far stellar AFL season for Port Adelaide.

But that domination faces a stern test, with the Power taking on Sydney in Saturday’s massive clash against the Swans at the SCG.

Port are two games clear in top spot and the Swans are on a seven-game winning streak, making this the potential match of the season.

But all the focus at Adelaide Airport on Friday morning was on Monfries, who played at Essendon until 2012.

There is speculation that Monfries and Stewart Crameri, also a former Bomber and now with the Western Bulldogs, are among 34 players to receive ASADA show cause notices.

The notices stem from Essendon’s 2012 supplements program.

A grim-faced Monfries cut a low profile to avoid waiting media and was tight-lipped when he finally appeared.

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley was also reluctant to discuss whether Monfries was handed a show cause notice.

“I thought I might get this question – right now as we stand it is a situation between Essendon and ASADA,” he said.

“We’ve got no more information on that, so right now I’ve got no more comments to make about the whole situation.”

Hinkley wants Port’s focus to stay on the heavyweight clash with Sydney, who are the AFL’s form side.

Although Port Adelaide are top of the ladder and enjoying an eight-match unbeaten run of their own, the Swans are pegged as favourites for the contest.

“It’s certainly going to be a significant test for us and one we’re looking forward to,” Hinkley said.

“We are travelling away to play an in-form team in the competition, one we have great respect for, and one that’s over a long period of time been up the top of the ladder.

“The odds say Sydney are favourites, I don’t really care, I go into this game expecting to win.”

Port skipper Travis Boak returns to the side after overcoming an ankle injury, while Monfries and midfielder Matt White have also recovered from injuries.

Jared Polec will miss with an ankle concern while Sam Gray and Ben Newton have been omitted.

Sydney have named ruckman Mike Pyke as the injured Kurt Tippett’s replacement while Brandon Jack comes in for Ben McGlynn (thumb).
