Tatt’s Cup 2014 – Tips

Tinto returns to the scene of her Group 1 Queensland Oaks victory and will take on older horses in the Tatt’s Cup at Eagle Farm Saturday. The filly dominates the betting at $2.60 with Peter Moody’s Wish Come True, an imported galloper who is coming off his maiden Australian, on the second line of betting at $4.00. Moody attempted to win this race last year with another imported galloper Ibicenco who started a well supported $3.70 second favourite but could only manage fourth. It is Interesting to note that the last two winners of this race have been on the quick back-up after competing in the Ipswich Cup (Garud)

1. MILITARY MOVE – R McMahon (10) 58kgs

The New Zealand galloper was plain in his first two runs since crossing the Tasman, finishing ninth (14.5 lengths) in the G2 Hollindale Stakes and then sixth (7.6 lengths) in the G3 Premier’s Cup (2200m). A drop in class when contesting the Toowoomba Cup at his most recent start though brought about an improved showing and the 7yo by Volksraad finished strong from worse than midfield to claim the race by a long neck over Carn. Might be the confidence boost he needed and his form back in NZ was very good but has drawn wide, has been assigned top weight and meets a much stronger field here.

2. WISH COME TRUE – G Boss (11) 55.5kgs

Pretty Pins - Ryan Wiggins
Pretty Pins – Ryan Wiggins

Former import that has had three starts for his Australian trainer Peter Moody, the most recent of which, he won.The 4yo son of Aussie Rules overcome some trouble around the tight Moonee Valley circuit to finish too well for Voila Ici, winning the Open (2040m) class race by a long neck under 58.5kgs. A win over Voila Ici is something to boast about but he is improving with every run and respect the stables decision to make the trip north for this race. Last start over this trip resulted in him running second in the G2 Italian Derby.

3. TINTO – T Bell (1) 54.5kgs

Rex Lipp’s filly has just kept improving with each run this year, culminating in a thoroughly deserved Group 1 win – the Queensland Oaks three weeks ago. Thought that may have been her Grand Final and that she would’ve gone for a well earned spell, but the trainer knows her best and she wouldn’t be here if she wasn’t still at the top of her game. The draw is perfect and despite taking on the older horses and males, she’ll give a bold showing again.

4. PRETTY PINS – R Wiggins (2) 54kgs

She didn’t really enjoy the wet tracks she encountered in Sydney and it wasn’t until she hit a dry track over a bit of ground that we saw the best of this 5yo Pins mare. She finished strongly to claim the G3 Chairman’s Handicap (Ipswich Cup winner Brave Ali was third) before third behind good stayers Zephyron and Precedence in the G3 Premier’s Cup (2200m). She got fourth on protest in the Brisbane Cup (2400m) at her most recent start behind Floria in a race run in very smart time. Better suited back to this grade and distance and will be finishing well.

5. GARUD – M Cahill (9) 54kgs

Victorian galloper who started the 11/2 favourite in last week’s Ipswich Cup where he was hoping to register his first win since claiming a BM 78 at Geelong back in October 2012. From a wide draw he was forced to settle well back in a race and on a track that favoured those closer to the speed. His effort to claim fifth (1.5 lengths) behind Brave Ali in limited room, was a good one. Has been Group 3 place, ran a close fourth in a last year’s Werribee Cup so definitely has the talent but as his strike rate of 3 wins from 27 starts suggests, he can find at least a few better than him on the day.

6. RAEBURN – A Allen (3) 54kgs

A rising 10yo who hasn’t got close to them in some of the feature staying races during the Brisbane Carnival. Started 100/1 when sixth (7.7 lengths) in the G2 Brisbane Cup at his most recent start and that was one of his better efforts. Can’t see him winning here.

7. IGGI POP – T Clark (5) 54kgs

Settled near last in the Hawkesbury Cup despite drawing a good gate but ran home well to finish tenth (3.1 lengths) behind Leebaz back in May. Three weeks later the Savabeel 5yo again was doing his best work late when sixth (1.8 lengths) behind Transonic in an Open class race over 1800m at Rosehill. His last two runs suggest this trip will suit and he has been competitive at this level in the past. One to keep safe.

8. PERFECT STAR – J Byrne (8) 54kgs

A New Zealand galloper who is lining up for her fifth start in Brisbane with the best of her efforts being her most recent, a fifth (2.9 lengths) in a Class 6 (1800m) on the Gold Coast. Her previous efforts, all in Group company, saw her well accounted for and she can’t win off of her most recent effort.

9. DODGING EDDIE – (7) 54kgs

Has improved with each of his four runs back from a lengthy spell and has won his most recent, a Gatton Open (2000m) where he finished too well from the back of the field for his ten rivals, winning by half a length. Takes a huge step up in class here though and will struggle.

10. DENWOOD – E Wilkinson (4) 54kgs

Yet to win a race in nine starts this year, all in much easier company than this. Caught wide throughout from a poor draw when fourth (5 lengths) behind Aldini in a BM 85 (1400m) on the Gold Coast before finishing hard from the tail of the field to claim third (0.6 lengths) behind Vandalised in the Tatt’s Gold Cup (1600m). Jumps to 2200m here, a distance he has only been over twice before where on both occasions, he was easily accounted for.

11. SHOTOVER RIVER – V Colgan (12) 54kgs

A lightly raced 4yo who has won four of his fifteen starts including his most recent effort, a Gold Coast Class 6 (1800m). That win made it two wins from three starts at 1800m and beyond but the widest gate and rise in class will be too much for him.

Special Offer 3: $700 FREE BET – Luxbet

12. THE INVENTOR – T Harrison (6) 54kgs

The Bevan Laming trained galloper commenced this campaign in Victoria before coming north where he has won two of his last three starts including last week’s Provincial Cup (2150m) at Ipswich. Secured a lovely run from the inside gate last week and held off Legazpi by ¾ length. Going well and the distance will pose no problem but the class may.
RACE OVERVIEW

Hard to find a leader here, could very well be Shotover River crossing over from the wide draw. Whatever the pace of the race however Tinto, who has drawn barrier one, will be positioned to advantage throughout by Bell. It’s not a race of great depth and she is coming off a Group 1 win but she is taking on older horses and males so the opening price of $2.60 is as short as you’d like to see. Pretty Pins might be the better value. Just found the class and trip a touch too rich last start and much better suited back here. She started 6/1 when third behind promising Zephyron and proven Precedence in the G3 Premiers over this trip and here, a race of much less depth, she’s the same price and carries the same weight. Trifecta hopes to Wish Come True, Iggi Pop and Garud.
