Australia’s teenage tennis sensation Nick Kyrgios will be the toast of punters nationwide if he continues his giant-killing run and wins Wimbledon, after odds as high as $1001 were offered by online bookie Sportingbet about the wildcard pre-tournament.
One Sportingbet punter has hopes of turning $100 into $50,100 after backing Kyrgios at odds of $501 following his round 1 win over Stephane Robert, with hundreds of other punters holding tickets for him to win at odds between $1001 and $251.
“Plenty of patriotic punters got on at the $1001 and they’ve continued to pile on him as he’s progressed through the tournament,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.
“We’ll be cheering Kyrgios on like the rest of Australia and we hope he goes the distance, but it’s fair to say he’s our worst result by a long way courtesy of the heavy support he’s attracted at such big odds.”
Kyrgios is now $17 equal fourth favourite at Sportingbet to win Wimbledon, with Novak Djokovic the $2.60 favourite ahead of Andy Murray ($3.25) and Roger Federer ($4.25).
Kyrgios is rated a $2.60 chance at Sportingbet to win his quarter-final against fellow big server Milos Raonic ($1.50).
