Mosheen wins Australian Guineas

Jockey Danny Nikolic has produced a brilliant ride from the outside barrier to help three-year-old filly Mosheen to an emphatic win in the Group One Australian Guineas at Flemington,

The runaway winner of the Group One VRC Oaks (2500m) in the spring, Mosheen started from barrier 16 on Saturday but Nikolic managed to position her perfectly near the fence soon after the start of the $750,000 1600m feature.

He then weaved a passage through the field in the straight and Mosheen did the rest, racing clear to beat Strike The Stars and Mister Milton.

It was the Fastnet Rock filly’s fifth win from 12 starts which have also yielded five placings for prizemoney in excess of $2 million.

“Absolutely unbelievable,” trainer Robert Smerdon said.

“That’s given me a great, great thrill.

“We were sort of knocked over about the barrier draw.

“(But) wins at the highest level are really special.

“It’s a big, big buzz.

“To my mind she’s a star.”
