Le Romain has added to his Group One mile record with a determined win in the Cantala Stakes at Flemington.
The Randwick Guineas winner over the distance last season as a three-year-old, Le Romani ($15) held off the luckless McCreery ($21) in the $1 million race on Saturday.
Tivaci made it a clean sweep of the placings for outsiders when he took third at $41.
Le Romain gave jockey Hugh Bowman his second Group One winner on Derby day after he rode Flying Artie to a Coolmore Stud Stakes upset.
Bowman said trainer Kris Lees was quietly confident Le Romain would relish the Flemington mile.
“He ran a hell of a race in the Epsom Handicap at Randwick when there was a tearaway leader and this horse took the field up to them,” Bowman said.
