Germany’s World Cup winning captain Lothar Matthaeus is set to become a TV star with the 50-year-old having signed a contract to feature in a reality show about his personal life.
The former midfielder, who lifted the 1990 World Cup with the then West Germany, has struggled to make his mark as a professional coach since retiring from playing in 2000 and has often said his dream is to coach a German league side.
He was sacked as Bulgaria’s national coach last September, after failing to qualify for Euro 2012, and also coached the Hungary national team from early 2004 until the end of 2005.
He has worked with a string of club teams in Austria, Brazil, Serbia and Israel, but all for short periods despite enjoying some success.
Oft ridiculed in the media here, Matthaeus says the idea of appearing in a six-to-eight part TV series to appear on German channel Vox, is to demonstrate to the German public what he is really like in a docu-soap.
Having been married four times and currently dating Polish underwear model Joanna Tuczynska, 23 years his junior, the former Bayern Munich star enjoyed a glittering playing career and holds the record of 150 appearances for Germany.
He won the inaugural World Player of the Year award in 1991 and played in five World Cup finals, making 25 appearances.
But his private life and four failed marriages have made him an easy target for tabloid newspapers here.
“I want to show people how I really am,” Matthaeus told German daily Bild.
“Most people are only familiar with some of the headlines.
“I think there will be a lot of positive surprises for me.”
While the cameras will have access to most aspects of his life, some areas will be off limits.
“The shower and bedroom are taboo and there won’t be any sex scenes for sure,” he said.
“But the cameras will be with me through all aspects which make up my life: my girlfriend Joanna, my children, my travels and my leisure time.”
