Vatuvei sees end to NRL try drought

Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei is confident it’s just a matter of time before he gets his next NRL try.

The lethal finisher is the club’s record try-scorer, having crossed 93 times in 141 first-grade appearances over nine seasons.

But the last of those was in the 26-6 win over Gold Coast in March, making it five matches that his name has been missing from the scoresheet.

That sequence is just one game short of his longest spell without a four-pointer, which came at the start of his career.

The player nicknamed The Beast breaks into a big smile when asked if he feels like a cricketer negotiating the nervous 90s.

He says there’s no frustration at being stuck on three touchdowns for the season since round four and it’s definitely not something that’s going to make him change his game.

“When a try comes, it comes,” he said.

“If it doesn’t, you just have to do something that gives somebody else the opportunity to score. I’m happy – I know the boys will set me up for a try soon.”

While Vatuvei has failed to grab a touchdown in recent weeks, he has still managed to use his 1.89m 112kg frame to damaging effect.

The 26-year-old has regularly clocked up more than 100 metres with ball in hand and continues to be a target for the Warriors’ last-tackle option, as shown by the kicks to his wing in the win over Brisbane last weekend.

It was his bat back from one Shaun Johnson bomb that provided the assist for the Elijah Taylor try that helped the Warriors establish a break on the Broncos.

“I know I haven’t been getting across the line, but I’m always doing my best to try and give other guys the opportunity to score tries,” he said.

“I’m trying my best to run the ball hard and getting good play-the-balls for the rest of the boys.”
