Lions’ Black avoids AFL ban over strike

Brisbane midfield star Simon Black can avoid an AFL suspension despite a striking charge.

Black was charged with striking Western Bulldogs tagger Liam Picken in the third quarter of the Lions’ big win at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

But the low-grade nature of the charge means Black can escape with a reprimand and still play against Melbourne at the Gabba on Sunday, if he pleads guilty and accepts a penalty discount.

Black has already had two stints on the sidelines this season.

He missed the Lions’ round three clash with Fremantle with a broken hand, then spent two games out with a knee injury before returning against the Bulldogs.

The only other charges laid from the weekend’s round related to a third-term melee in Sunday’s MCG clash between Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney.

Demons Nathan Jones, Daniel Nicholson, Mark Jamar and Brent Moloney and Giants Tomas Bugg, Taylor Adams, Toby Greene and Dylan Shiel all face fines.

Fremantle’s Adam McPhee was cleared over a jumper punch on Essendon’s Leroy Jetta at Patersons Stadium on Saturday night, with the blow deemed of insufficient force to constitute a strike.
