News:

Group One-winning jockey Regan Bayliss has been given the green light to return to trackwork next week and expects to be back at the races before the end of the season.

Bayliss broke his wrist in a race fall at Geelong on May 19 and received positive news about his recovery from the injury when he visited doctor Gary Zimmerman on Monday.

“He was very surprised how quickly it has healed in the last three weeks,” Bayliss said.

“He was very happy with the bone. It’s almost completely healed and he’s happy for me to start trackwork next Monday with the view of riding trackwork for two weeks and then aiming to be back riding around the 22nd of July.”

Bayliss outrode his claim earlier this season before finishing his apprenticeship early and has ridden 32 city winners in Victoria during 2016/17, with the season to finish at the end of this month.

The biggest win of his career came in March at Flemington when he won his first Group One race aboard Redkirk Warrior in the Newmarket Handicap for the Lindsay Park stable.

Bayliss is excited to be nearing a return and the 20-year-old is hoping to quickly build momentum as the spring carnival approaches.

“It’s been good to have a little bit of a break but I’m definitely excited to get back doing what I love,” Bayliss said.

“It’s unfortunate I did have this injury but if you’re ever going to pick a time to have off, it would be around this winter time.

“I’m just really looking forward to getting myself fit, mentally and physically, over the next couple of weeks so that I’m cherry ripe for when I come back, hopefully on the 22nd of July.

“Fingers crossed I come back and it doesn’t take me long to start riding in good form again and building a bit of momentum going into the spring.”
