Lewis set to leave Panthers

Luke Lewis is set to announce he’ll leave Penrith later this year at the end of his 11th season with the NRL club.

The NSW and Australia back-rower was furious at being stripped of the captaincy last month by coach Ivan Cleary and News Limited reports the 28-year-old has been granted a release from the remaining two years of his contract.

Lewis, who was a member of the 2003 Panthers side that won the NRL premiership, is unable to join another club until the end of the 2012 campaign as the June 30 deadline for mid-season transfers has passed.

Lewis and Penrith general manager Phil Gould will face the media at Centrebet Stadium at 2pm.
