Double celebration for new No.1 Halep

Simona Halep achieved a career dream on Saturday as she claimed the WTA No.1 ranking after defeating Jelena Ostapenko 6-2 6-4 to reach the final of the China Open.

She is the first Romanian player to claim the top honour and will be the 25th world No.1 since rankings began in 1975.

She will officially end the four-week stand of Spain’s Garbine Muguruza at the top of the table on Monday, with just a few weeks left in the regular WTA season.

Halep, who is coached by Australia Darren Cahill, has repeatedly missed out this season on the top spot while standing just one win away from ranking glory.

“It’s very emotional, I think it’s the first time I cried on court,” Halep said during the ranking presentation ceremony.

“It’s amazing that I could do this. My team, everyone at home…is watching, and I want to thank everyone. It’s my special day.

“When I was five (ranking) points away, I felt that I want it more and more. I try just to not think too much about that, to stop thinking, because you feel the pressure when you’re thinking too much.

“I will never forget this day or this tournament. I always get great support in China, and I’m waiting for tomorrow – the tournament is not finished.”

Halep will bid for the title in the Chinese capital on Sunday against Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, who beat Petra Kvitova 6-3 7-5.
