No Melbourne Cup penalty for Star

Amelie’s Star has not been given a weight penalty in Caulfield and Melbourne Cups for her victory in the Group Three Bart Cummings at Flemington.

The Darren Weir-trained mare earned a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup on November 7 with her two-length victory in Saturday’s 2500m race and remains on 51kg for both Cups.

While she is assured a Melbourne Cup start, the six-year-old remains 35th in the Caulfield Cup order of entry ahead of Tuesday’s second acceptances for the race on October 21.

“Amelie’s Star’s Melbourne Cup weight will be 51kg, the same weight Almandin was given after he won the Bart Cummings in 2016 before going on to win the Melbourne Cup,” Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said.

“Amelie’s Star will meet Almandin on the same weight terms in the Melbourne Cup as she did on Saturday (5.5kg less) and is 1.5kg worse off against Harlem.”

Almandin finished fourth in Saturday’s Bart Cummings while Harlem, who earned a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption with his win in the Naturalism Stakes the start before, was fifth.

Amelie’s Star shares the second line of Melbourne Cup betting at $13 behind Almandin at $7 while she is second favourite for the 2017 Caulfield Cup at $6 behind star New Zealand mare Bonneval at $4.60.
