Roger Federer needed a second-set tiebreak to finish off his rain-affected meeting with Federico Delbonis in the ATP Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells.

Taro Daniel, the world No.109, notched the biggest win of his career as the qualifier beat the Serbian 10th seed 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-1.

Briton Kyle Edmund, who has been out of action with a hip injury, was beaten in straight sets by Israel’s Dudi Sela 6-4 6-4, in his first match since reaching the semi-finals at Melbourne Park.

Frenchman Gael Monfils overcame 15th-seeded American John Isner 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.

Spanish veteran David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez recorded routine straight-sets wins over Tennys Sandgren and Ernesto Escobedo respectively.

Other second-round winners on Sunday were Philipp Kohlschreiber, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Yuki Bhambri while Japan’s Kei Nishikori was forced to withdraw prior to his opening match when he fell ill.
