NSW Waratahs hooker Tolu Latu has been added to the Wallabies squad for the first Test in Brisbane on Saturday.
Latu comes into the extended 33-man squad as coach Michael Cheika mulls over his options for the troublesome No.2 jumper.
Latu’s inclusion comes after Rebels rake Jordan Uelese was ruled out after confirmation of his anterior cruciate ligament injury.
It says much about the dearth of options for the Australians in the position that Latu’s four caps is the most of the three hookers selected.
“Right now he’s our most-capped hooker in Australia, so he’s got that little bit of experience playing in the big match atmosphere,” Cheika said.
“Anaru Rangi has had a really good season with Melbourne too so he’s definitely not out of the equation. I’m just keen for the two uncapped hookers (Brandon Paenga-Amosa and Folau Fainga’a) to have a little experience around.
Cheika will announce the final squad on Thursday with Latu likely to feature on the bench.
“He’s been out of favour at the Tahs for a lot of the year and he’s coming back into favour a little,” Cheika said of Latu.
“His two or three games he’s played, I think he’s had a good impact and he’s been excellent since he’s been in camp.
“He’ll be banking on his last few games of form but also his previous games for the Wallabies and I’m sure he’ll do well.”
