He’s not dismissing the prospect of signing Parramatta’s Corey Norman but Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan says local feeder clubs are the priority ahead of the June 30 NRL transfer deadline.
Brennan has confirmed an informal approach from Norman’s management after he fell out of favour at Parramatta over off field dramas.
The Eels playmaker was fined $20,000 two weeks ago for drinking alcohol while injured, adding to speculation Parramatta may cut ties with him before June 30.
“If he (Norman) became available then a quality footballer would certainly be brought to the attention of our recruitment committee,” Brennan said ahead of Saturday’s NRL clash with Canterbury.
“Corey can play five-eighth and fullback. This year we are pretty comfortable in those positions but you need depth and some experience and Corey brings that as well.”
Brennan said he was happy with current halves Ash Taylor and AJ Brimson plus veteran fullback Michael Gordon but did not rule out rejigging his side to accommodate Norman.
“AJ is more than capable of playing (fullback) and Michael Gordon can play on the wing – there are some options there,” he said.
However Brennan said feeder clubs Queensland Cup outfits Tweed Heads Seagulls and Burleigh Bears were in their recruitment committee’s immediate sights before June 30.
“It’s important we don’t rush in and sign someone for the sake of it,” he said.
“We will look at Burleigh and Tweed first … to see if someone can come in for the rest of the year and do a job for us.
“We are determined to look there first but if there is nothing there then obviously we will look outside the area.”
Dumped Titans half Kane Elgey may be the first plucked from Queensland Cup after impressing for Tweed since being relegated by Brennan two months ago.
An NRL return would be a shot in the arm for the off contract five eighth who has been in limbo while mulling offers from NRL and UK Super League rivals.
Brennan said Elgey was “nipping at the heels” of Brimson and did not rule out re-signing him.
“We are still talking to Kane’s management. They are testing the market and seeing what is out there and I can see there are a few options there for him,” he said.
