Bennett wants Origin held in June

Forget stand alone State of Origin games.

Wayne Bennett wants a stand alone Origin series in June.

The former Queensland coach has thrown his support behind the NRL introducing a stand alone Sunday night Origin clash this year – June 24’s game two at ANZ Stadium.

It is the first Sunday night Origin game held since 2001.

However, Bennett said ideally the whole interstate series would be held in a stand alone month-long period with 10-day breaks between each match.

“I love it. I think it’s great,” the Brisbane NRL coach said of Sunday night Origin football.

“(But) Origin should be the month of June…then we all get on with the competition.

“There is an opportunity to do that with a 10-day turnaround but that would involve playing on Sundays and Wednesday nights – it’s a good mix.

“I think playing in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane is a great idea too.”

Perth’s Optus Stadium is reportedly set to host the 2019 stand alone Origin fixture.

The NRL has already announced Adelaide Oval will host a 2020 Origin with more scheduled for the MCG (2021, 2025).

Melbourne hosted 2018’s Origin I which NSW claimed 22-12.
