Wayne Bennett wants to know if he has a future at Brisbane, saying the board’s lack of a succession plan is unlike the NRL club.

Bennett, 68, is off contract next year but is believed to have tabled his future plans to a Broncos board meeting on Wednesday in a bid to get a contract extension.

Bennett is suddenly in a position of power after Craig Bellamy knocked back a lucrative deal to stay with Melbourne.

In his 25th season at the Broncos helm, Bennett believed it would be to the club’s benefit if he got an answer from the Brisbane board sooner rather than later.

“The major reason (to get a prompt reply) is that we don’t want any distractions going into the back end of the season,” Bennett said ahead of Saturday night’s NRL clash with Canberra.

“We have had a season of distractions here and it’s been remarkable what these players have done under the circumstances.

“It’s not who the Broncos are and it is not what I want the Broncos to be so we need to get some clarity so we can get our jobs done.”

Asked if he expected an answer soon, Bennett said: “I hope so.”

Bennett also became tight lipped when asked if it helped that speculation over Bellamy had finally been put to bed.

“It’s always a bonus,” Bennett said.

“(But) you need to talk to the chairman and CEO about this stuff, it is out of my hands.”

Meanwhile, Brisbane prop Korbin Sims has been cleared of a broken jaw and will make his return in the Suncorp Stadium clash with the Raiders.

Sims will replace Patrick Mago on the bench after being injured in a Dylan Napa tackle in their round 11 clash with Sydney Roosters on May 18.
