Brisbane’s Darius Boyd doesn’t shy away from the fact his NRL season has been nothing short of a let down.
But after reigniting the Broncos’ campaign over the last fortnight, he feels like he’s getting back to his best.
Boyd had his best outing of the year in Brisbane’s season-turning 22-8 win over the Sydney Roosters on Saturday.
The Broncos skipper was involved in many of his side’s best moments in both attack and defence.
His sweeping run across three-quarters of the field before turning Corey Oates back inside for their first try showed he hadn’t lost any of his pace or vision.
Then in the second half he denied Joseph Manu – who had already beaten three defenders – with a last-ditch try-saving shove over the sideline.
“It’s pretty obvious to see it hasn’t been my best year personally on the field and I’ve been disappointed with that,” Boyd said.
“The last two weeks I’ve definitely been happy with my performances.
“It’s about building at the right time of year and it’s about getting confidence back.”
Boyd suffered an untimely hamstring injury during last year’s finals, a problem which carried into this year.
In March he admitted he would be forced into retirement if the problem persisted.
After missing last year’s World Cup finals through injury, he announced his representative retirement following his axing from the Queensland Origin side.
And in round 19 Bennett made the decision to move Jamayne Isaako back to fullback ahead of Boyd – though Boyd has returned to the No.1 for the last three games.
Asked what he had done right to get himself back on track, Boyd said: “It’s a good question. If I did know I would have done it earlier.”
