It’s the scene of Greg Inglis’ greatest on-field blunder but the South Sydney skipper refuses to be haunted by the hallowed Sydney Cricket Ground.
The Queensland and Australian champion has accumulated a career littered with highlights and achievements but there is one incident he can’t escape – his inexplicable field goal attempt against St George Illawarra in 2016.
Down 8-6 with less than 10 seconds on the clock, Inglis called for the ball at first receiver and dropped it onto his boot.
His teammates threw their hands in the air in disbelief while pain was etched on Inglis’ face as he looked up at the scoreboard and it dawned on him what he’d done.
As he prepares to return to the SCG for the first time on Friday, when the Rabbitohs meet premiers the Sydney Roosters in a blockbuster season-opener, he is being forced to re-live his brain snap.
“It doesn’t bother me, I have a joke about it every day,” Inglis told AAP.
“It’s funny to me. At the time I just kicked it, I didn’t know what I was thinking. I thought it was a draw.”
To this day even he can’t explain it.
“I just have a laugh about it now. It is what it is,” Inglis said.
“You can’t undo what we’ve done in the past. Every time we go back there we talk about it. Every time we go there for training I say to the ball boys, ‘Give me a ball, I’m kicking a field goal’.
“Even in the sheds afterwards (then coach Michael Maguire) said to me, ‘What were you thinking?’ I said ‘I don’t know, I just kicked the ball mate’. We just started laughing.”
Inglis did not take part in the Rabbitohs’ two trial matches as he recovers from a knee injury but said he was on-track to take his place against their local rivals.
If he does line up, it will likely be at centre rather than fullback as he eases himself back to full fitness.
“I’ve got to get through the next week of training but at the moment it looks like I’ll be lining up for round one,” Inglis said.
