Bailey, Maxwell gain contract upgrades

Australia’s Twenty20 captain George Bailey and fellow first-year international Glenn Maxwell have been upgraded to the national contract list, Cricket Australia announced on Monday.

Bailey made his one-day international (ODI) and T20 International debuts earlier in 2012 and was upgraded on August 31 after playing six ODIs, CA said.

His upgrade means if Australia win the World T20 crown later this week, the 30-year-old Tasmanian will at least be on CA’s books.

Victoria’s Maxwell, 23, was upgraded on September 22 after playing four ODIs and four T20Is.

CA released its annual list of contracted players in June 2012, having cut the number from 25 to 17 with some players having opportunities to win upgrades depending on the number of games played.

Short-form specialist David Hussey was included on the list despite never having played a Test, while Test opener Ed Cowan was left out although he’s expected to win an upgrade if he holds his spot in the Test side this summer.

Cowan hasn’t played any ODIs or T20Is and has a very poor Test average of 29.83 in seven matches.

David Hussey’s inclusion on the contract list has sparked controversy given the 35-year-old Victorian has not been selected in any of Australia’s four matches so far in the World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka.

CA chief James Sutherland said in June 2012 there was provision for about 13 players to be upgraded throughout the following 12-month period.
