Fensom a fan of Broncos young gun Flegler

Tevita Pangai’s brutal display set up Brisbane’s impressive NRL win over North Queensland but another Broncos young gun caught the eye of Shaun Fensom.

The Broncos recruit, who made his first appearance for his new club off the bench in the 29-10 win at Suncorp Stadium, was full of praise for fellow interchange forward Thomas Flegler.

In his second NRL game, the 19-year-old Flegler played 35 minutes off the bench and claimed a game-high 172 metres.

Flegler also made 19 tackles, two offloads and linebreak in a hugely impressive display.

“He was outstanding. At training here you can see that in him,” Fensom said.

“To push the minutes that he did for his second NRL game was outstanding and I’m very excited for him.

“He’s a great young fella coming through.”

The Broncos got straight back to work on Sunday with a training session in 30-plus heat ahead of Thursday visit by St George Illawarra to Suncorp Stadium.

The Dragons are winless in 2019 and head north with key back-rowers Jack de Belin (stood down) and Tyson Frizell (testicle) unavailable.

Despite those absences, Fensom says the Broncos are wary of the Dragons, particularly after last year’s 48-18 qualifying final loss to Paul McGregor’s men in Brisbane.

“We need to back up that effort we had on the weekend,” Fensom said. “We need a strong performance like that each week.

T (Pangai) was great out there but all our other forwards and outside backs were really strong as well.

“Jack Bird on our line there he had some really good defensive reads and it was just a very pleasing performance.”
