Murray to back up NSW Origin No.9 Cook

Outside of 15 minutes of reserve grade at dummy-half and a few passing drills with Damien Cook at South Sydney training, Cameron Murray doesn’t have much experience at hooker to speak of.

But he’s bullish about doing a job for NSW during his State of Origin debut if he’s called on to deputise at No.9.

The Rabbitohs’ lock forward is shaping as Brad Fittler’s back-up plan should Cook go down during the series opener on Wednesday night at Suncorp Stadium.

Cook is expected to play the full 80 minutes but, in the event of injury, Murray is next cab off the rank.

Bench utility Jack Wighton is in the side to cover the outside backs and halves, however has no experience at dummy-half, meaning Murray will be the Blues’ back-up plan.

“If Damien goes down, I’m next in line,” Murray said.

“I’ve done a little bit there with Damien throughout the year. I don’t have a heap of experience but I’m next in line when you look at who we’ve got in the side.”

He said if he was called on, he wouldn’t try to over-complicate things or attempt to recreate Cook’s running game and would simply try to ensure his halves received good ball and kept his defence tight.

Asked about his experience in the position, Murray said: “I played about 15 minutes there in reserve grade for one game so I’ve never really played there.

“I don’t think I’ll struggle too much – I’ll handle it quite well.”

Murray’s Origin selection came after a stellar opening 11 weeks with the Rabbitohs and beat off the likes of Victor Radley and Dale Finucane for the back-row spot vacated by Jack de Belin’s suspension.

He has been named on the bench but it has been suggested he might start, with Jake Trbojevic to be used as an impact player, however he says that is unlikely.

“I haven’t heard anything but I don’t think so,” Murray said.

“Jake has earned that spot, he’s proved that he’s fit for that No.13 jumper and he’s earned it.

“He’s a leader in this side. You can always count on him to do his job.”
