McLaughlin one win off Darwin Triple Crown

Scott McLaughlin is one step away from becoming the first driver to win Darwin’s elusive Triple Crown after he won the top-10 Supercars shootout on Sunday.

No driver has won the two races and top-10 shootout in the Top End since the event’s inception in 2006 and DJR Team Penske star McLaughlin is now two-thirds of the way there.

The New Zealander is enjoying a flawless weekend in his Ford Mustang, he was quickest in practice on Friday and won race one from pole on Saturday.

McLaughlin picked up where he left off on Sunday and won the shootout by 0.015 seconds from teammate Fabian Coulthard, to equal Peter Brock (57) in equal-second on the all-time pole positions list.

“One more to go,” McLaughlin said.

David Reynolds was third fastest while Cameron Waters and Lee Holdsworth rounded out the top five.

McLaughlin has been nearly unstoppable this season and is on track for back-to-back championships after 11 poles and 11 wins from 15 races.

He leads the drivers’ standings by 298 points.

McLaughlin’s quest for a Darwin trifecta with victory in race two will commence at 2:00pm AEST.
