Furious Kyrgios wins in Queen’s opener

Nick Kyrgios has opened his Queen’s Club campaign with a victory in typically controversial fashion, combining moments of brilliance with anger and comedy.

Kyrgios beat Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in a match dominated by his constant dialogue with chair umpire Fergus Murphy.

Incensed by what he claimed was failure to call a Carballes Baena second serve out when he was on set point, Kyrgios unloaded on Murphy shouting at him: “You’re taking the piss, it was so far long.”

The controversial Canberran then bellowed: “it’s all rigged,” threatened the quit the match after being issued with a code violation.

He then demanded Murphy call the tournament supervisor with the real threat that he may be defaulted from the match for the second time in a month following his Italian Open brain snap.

Playing in a match that had been moved to court two due to the rain delays that have blighted the tournament, Kyrgios entertained the small crowd with tweeners, under-arm serves, some outrageous drop shots and the ever-present threat of a meltdown.

Failing to return a serve early in the match, Kyrgios informed the ball girl holding his towel that he “shouldn’t have eaten burger and fries last night.”

Kyrgios finally got his head together in the opening set to win a tiebreak, muttering that his opponent’s ‘forehand was stronger than his serve’.

When tournament supervisor Ali Nili finally arrived early in the second set to listen to Kyrgios’ gripes, he was greeted by the Aussie with: “Well it’s a bit late now,” before he went off on another rant about Murphy.

With the Spaniard doing his best to keep his cool, Kyrgios closed out the match by walking up to the edge of the service box to return.

The tactic threw the world No.72 and he was broken for a second time as Kyrgios closed out the win without any further dramas.

He will now meet exciting Canadian teenager Felix Auger Aliassime who beat former champion Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-4.
