Fritz wins maiden ATP title in Eastbourne

American Taylor Fritz has claimed his maiden ATP title in Eastbourne, beating compatriot Sam Querrey 6-3 6-4 in the final.

Playing only his second final, Fritz made a solid start on Saturday to break Querrey to love in his first return game.

Fritz went on to dominate the majority of the baseline rallies, while Querrey was undone by unforced errors in key moments of the match.

The 21-year-old Fritz clinched another early break of serve in the second set before closing out the victory in just over an hour with an ace.

Fritz, son of former top-10 player Kathy May, will look to carry his success over to Wimbledon, where he begins his campaign against Czech Tomas Berdych on Tuesday.

Querrey was playing his first final since the New York Open in 2018, and will meet world No.4 Dominic Thiem in his opening match.

In Turkey, Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego won his first career ATP singles title at the Antalya Open, saving a championship point before roaring back to beat Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-1.

Sonego, whose semi-final against Pablo Carreno Busta was suspended due to rain on Friday, returned to the court on Saturday morning to defeat the Spaniard before surviving an early onslaught by the 19-year-old Kecmanovic.

The teenager showed plenty of grit throughout the contest, saving seven of the nine break points he faced, but served poorly, landing just 56 per cent of his first serves. Sonego grew stronger as the match progressed.

The 24-year-old Italian sent down 25 aces to Kecmanovic’s five and won 85 per cent of his first serve points as he wrapped up the win in a little under three hours.

Sonego kicks off his Wimbledon campaign against Spanish qualifier Marcel Granollers, while Kecmanovic faces another Spaniard, Roberto Carballes Baena, in his opening match at the All England Club.
