GWS hope for good news on key AFL injury

GWS are sweating on scan results after star onballer Stephen Coniglio hurt his left knee in the opening minutes of their AFL loss to Richmond.

The Giants are already reeling from three-straight losses and were missing key players Callan Ward, Matt de Boer and Josh Kelly from Sunday’s team.

Coach Leon Cameron said post-match he did not know the seriousness of Coniglio’s injury.

But he hopes it is less serious than Ward, who needed a season-ending knee reconstruction after he was hurt in their big round-four away win over Geelong.

“There’s no doubt there are going to be people fearing the worst,” Cameron said.

“I can’t give you an answer yet – it’s not like Callan Ward.

“It’s clearly a lot more positive than that, but (we won’t know) until we get it really, thoroughly checked out.”

Cameron added that Coniglio was in good spirits after the game.

The left knee was already strapped after an injury the previous weekend during their loss to Brisbane.

Sunday’s incident was an innocuous change of direction, without any contact.

It was immediately clear that Coniglio had done something significant and the Giants star needed help from two trainers as he limped off the MCG.

Cameron also was adamant that Coniglio was fit to play against the Tigers, saying they sought widespread advice.

“You’re heading down the wrong path if you’re trying to tie the two together,” Cameron said of the two injuries.

Coniglio becomes a restricted free agent at the end of this season and Victorian clubs are circling with big offers.
