Fixing Titans a 2-3 year job: Bennett

Wayne Bennett has warned the new Gold Coast coach will need two or three years to turn around the struggling Titans.

Veteran South Sydney mentor Wayne Bennett on Thursday confirmed reports he was interested in that task when coaching Brisbane but unwanted there for 2019.

The Titans stuck with Garth Brennan before sacking him this month with the team anchored at the bottom of the ladder.

The seven-time premiership coach said resurrecting the Titans had appealed to him at the time because he did not want to leave Brisbane and the Gold Coast was nearby.

But also because he was frustrated as “the game needs the Titans to be good” and the club had a lot going for it.

“(But) I’ve run out of time, so it’s probably not going to happen now,” said Bennett adding that he was “very happy in Sydney”.

“I’ve come to a wonderful club … it’s worked out well for me.”

Queensland State of Origin coach Kevin Walters, a former Bennett assistant, is reportedly favoured to get the Titans job although he has declined to express interest in it publicly.

Bennett said Walters had the qualifications for the job but people need to recognise that the task would take time, whoever got it.

“It would take two or three years to build the club, but they’ve got quality players and a good facility.”

He also warned the coach sackings of recent years – Neil Henry was also axed in 2017 – could add to issues facing the new coach.

“Obviously the thing is every time you change the coach, you let the players take charge more.

“I don’t know (whether that is happening at Titans), I’m not there. But that’s how it works in clubs – that’s just human nature.

“You’ve just got to accept it’s a tough gig when you get there. If people are looking for an overnight success, it’s just not going to happen.”
