Dockers are letting down Lyon: Walters

Fremantle star Michael Walters feels like he and his teammates have failed embattled coach Ross Lyon as the AFL club has slumped from finals contention.

Lyon’s position has come under intense scrutiny following the 47-point loss to the Western Bulldogs, which saw them slip to 12th on the ladder with an 8-10 record.

That result made it five defeats from the past six games, leading to speculation about Lyon’s future, despite his contract for next year.

“Me, personally, I feel like we’re letting him (Lyon) down,” Walters told reporters on Tuesday.

“But we’re fully committed and Ross is fully committed. We just need to be more consistent.

“Inconsistency is letting us down, especially at the start of games.

“I can tell you right now, Ross hasn’t lost the players.

“We’re fully aware of the criticism that Ross is copping, but to his credit he doesn’t bring that to the club.

“Ross doesn’t come into meetings talking about the criticism that he’s copping, he cops it on the chin. He’s good at that and he doesn’t make us players feel like we’re letting him down either.”

Fremantle were second on the ladder after round six and still well in contention in sixth after round 13.

But for the fourth season in a row, the Dockers have been unable to finish strongly.

“We saw in the first half of the year that our game plan stands up against the better quality teams,” Walters said.

“We have been dropping over the last couple of years in the second half of the year and that comes down to the group.

“I don’t want to use that as an excuse, but we do have a young group, that’s just the facts.

“We just need to make sure we stay positive.”
