Perth to host three Roosters NRL matches

Perth will host at least two NRL matches per season over the next three years after the Sydney Roosters became the latest team to test their luck out west.

The NRL defending premiers have agreed to play one fixture a year at Perth’s HBF Park until the end of 2022, building on the success of the city’s recent hosting of State of Origin II.

The new partnership between the Roosters and the Western Australian government was revealed on Tuesday morning, replacing the current three-year deal the franchise struck with South Australia to play one game each season in Adelaide.

The move is designed to capitalise on the growing popularity of rugby league throughout Western Australia.

It follows news that fellow NRL giants Canterbury Bulldogs will also take one home game a year to Perth from 2020 onwards while Sydney’s ANZ Stadium is being redeveloped.

“The Roosters have a strong following in Western Australia and we are pleased to have the opportunity to expand the Sydney Roosters brand across the country,” Roosters chief executive Joe Kelly said.

“Following the success of State of Origin this year the appetite for Rugby League in WA has never been stronger.”

Perth are hopeful they will have a team of their own in time for the next NRL broadcast deal, which begins in 2023.

NRL WA chief executive John Sackson has been campaigning for the past decade to have an NRL team permanently based in Perth and momentum is growing for it to happen.

An Optus Stadium record crowd of 59,721 turned up for NSW’s 38-6 win over Queensland in Origin II this year, while the 2018 round-one NRL double header at the venue was also a success after attracting 38,824 fans.
