Eels vow Lane drama won’t mar finals push

Parramatta have vowed not to let the Shaun Lane drama distract them as they prepare for the run into just their second NRL finals series in 10 years.

The NRL integrity unit were on Tuesday continuing to investigate the second-rower after photos – believed to have been taken last September – reportedly show Lane with a white substance.

Eels club officials have already met with Lane, and will work with the NRL before any findings are handed down.

An outcome is expected this week, but Lane trained with Eels teammates on Tuesday and they insist it won’t affect preparation for Friday’s clash with Gold Coast.

“It’s not going to have any impact on the way we go out and train today or play on the weekend,” captain Clinton Gutherson told reporters.

“We’ve got a goal set for the end of the year and we’ve just got to do what we can do to reach it.”

Parramatta sit sixth on the NRL ladder, three wins clear of ninth spot and all but certain to return to the business end of the season.

The photos, published by The Daily Telegraph, were reportedly taken at Manly’s ‘Mad Monday’ celebrations last year, before Lane had joined the Eels.

There is therefore an argument any match suspension would punish both a club and teammates Lane was not representing at the time of the alleged incident.

“It doesn’t derail us as a group. We just stick together as a group and get through it,” said centre Michael Jennings.

“We know our job. There’s always going to be adversity. It’s just getting through it all. It’s just unfortunate timing.”

Meanwhile, Jennings said he was hopeful of finalising a new contract with Parramatta this week, after he rejected a longer offer from Newcastle to stay at the Eels this summer.

“It’s really close. I want to sort it out this week so we’re not focusing on it going into the finals,” he said.

“I backed myself to stay here and was confident in my ability and that I had more to offer here at the club.”
