Brisbane v Geelong – five big questions

KEY QUESTIONS AHEAD OF LIONS-CATS AFL CLASH:

* Will the Lions wilt on the big stage?

After starting the season in hot form, Brisbane drew a sellout crowd to the Gabba for their prime-time Easter Thursday game against Collingwood. But the Lions didn’t turn up, slumping to a 62-point defeat. They haven’t lost at the Gabba since, but Chris Fagan’s cubs are largely unproven under pressure. This is their chance to atone.

* Do the conditions give Brisbane the edge?

On paper, you’d have to say yes. The weather bureau is forecasting a sunny 28-degree day in Brisbane; this in contrast to Melbourne, where temperatures have barely climbed beyond the mid-teens all winter. The Cats will be confident in their ability to perform anywhere, in any conditions, but it will take some adjustment.

* Can Geelong’s backline stifle Brisbane’s forwards?

The Lions are the highest-scoring team in the competition. Geelong are the stingiest. It makes for a fascinating contest, particularly considering Brisbane boast the AFL’s form small forward in Charlie Cameron. Key defender Mark Blicavs is in All-Australian contention but it’s the collective that makes Geelong’s backline so effective. Their ability to set up behind the ball and rotate between opponents is unparalleled.

* Who prevails out of Tom Hawkins and Harris Andrews?

Both have had terrific seasons but Andrews will go into this game with some trepidation, considering Hawkins kicked seven goals on him last time they met. Hawkins’ strength makes him extremely difficult to beat in a one-on-one contest, meaning the Lions must starve him of supply and zone off to help out Andrews.

* How do the Lions stop Patrick Dangerfield?

If Tim Kelly was the main man for Geelong in the first half of the season, Dangerfield has firmly regained the mantle in recent weeks. The Brownlow Medallist has a rare ability to lift within games and inspire his team. Lions skipper Dayne Zorko is a capable run-with player but gives up a fair bit of size to Dangerfield, making it more likely Mitch Robinson will be given primary responsibility.
