Daniher focused on injury, not AFL future

Injured Essendon forward Joe Daniher says he’s “comfortable” with his current contract situation, but has stopped short of openly committing to the Bombers long-term.

Daniher, who is contracted at Essendon until the end of 2020, has been linked to a move to Sydney after meeting their chief executive Tom Harley recently.

Both the Swans and Bombers have said that meeting was about the forward catching up with a long-time mentor, rather than Daniher’s football future.

“I don’t make too much comment in the media … I’ve addressed those comments that were made and I think the football club has and the Swans have as well,” Daniher told AAP at the Kayo AFL finals launch.

“I don’t need to put any more comments on it and (I’m) really comfortable with how the situation is.

“I look after my career and my football club at the moment and there’s a final this week and hopefully the boys can get the job done.”

Daniher said he was focused on rehabilitating his injury, rather than discussing his future.

“Just kicking on with the rehab for me – my management and the football club are always in regular contact and we’ve got fantastic relationships so it’s just business as usual for me,” he said.

The star Bomber has been restricted to just 11 games over the past two years, including four this year and admitted it was frustrating, particularly around finals time.

“That’s just (how) the cards have been dealt for now and and I’ll do my best to get back as quick as possible and hopefully be back playing football soon,” he said.

Daniher said he’d tried to use his injury lay-off as an opportunity to be a leader around the club.

“Your focus does shift a little bit when you’re out of (the game). You can look a bit longer-term and what I want our football club to look like and give some support to some players I think I can help out with,” he said.

“And obviously I’m a part of the leadership group and trying to lead as best I can.”
