Canberra say they’ve buried their golden-point bunny and now want to improve their home record ahead of a tilt at a drought-breaking NRL premiership.
The Raiders have all but clinched their second top-four finish in 16 years heading into their final-round clash with the Warriors in Canberra on Saturday.
It means the Green Machine will earn a double chance and host a semi-final or a preliminary final depending on their result in the first week of finals.
But GIO Stadium hasn’t been the fortress the Raiders hoped it would be in 2019, with their 9-3 away record largely responsible for sitting them third on the ladder.
Canberra are 6-5 at home this season and co-captain Jarrod Croker said he wants to turn that into a winning record over the next month.
“It’s not ideal, I didn’t realise that stat to be honest,” Croker said.
“We’ve got quite a strong record overall but that’s not ideal. We want Canberra to be a fortress. It’s disappointing to hear that stat so we’ll be looking to rectify that on Saturday and for finals.
“We love playing at home and Saturday will be no different.”
The Raiders developed a habit of losing close games in 2017 and 2018 but have managed to turn that around this season, including an epic golden-point win against Cronulla last week.
English recruit Ryan Sutton won two of the past three Super League titles with Wigan and believes Canberra has what it takes to end a 25-year premiership drought.
“Everyone wants to come over and play in an NRL grand final and we’ve got the squad to do it,” Sutton said.
“You’d rather win like that (against Cronulla) than lose by playing well. One of our focuses at the start of the year that we wanted was to win a game in golden point and we’ve achieved that.
“We’ve got a lot of good leaders but also a lot of young boys that take confidence from that win so it’s only going to help us moving forward.”
