Lions must move on and regroup: Fagan

Dust yourselves off and try again.

That’s the message from Brisbane coach Chris Fagan to his shellshocked players after being mauled by a ruthless Richmond in Saturday’s AFL qualifying final.

In front of the biggest crowd ever seen at an AFL match at the Gabba, Brisbane outplayed the Tigers for large parts of their first final in a decade but found themselves on the end of a 47-point defeat.

Failure to convert chances when on top was crucial, with a merciless Tigers kicking 18.4 (112) to 8.17 (65) to move into a preliminary final for the third year in a row.

The Lions now face a buoyant GWS in a do-or-die semi-final at the Gabba next Saturday after the Giants flogged the Western Bulldogs in their elimination final.

Fagan was hopeful his team would be better with the experience of a final despite the result when they take on the Giants.

“We have to bounce back pretty quickly and GWS were really impressive,” Fagan said.

“They’re a very good side and they’ve been playing in finals for a few years so we’ll see next weekend just how much we’ve learned.

“But I expect we’ll respond well.”

Having had few injury concerns throughout their season, Mitch Robinson limping off in the final quarter against the Tigers with a hamstring issue is an added headache for Fagan.

The Lions coach said the fiery midfielder is a serious doubt for the clash with the Giants.

“That’ll be a scan. There’s something going on with his hamstring,” Fagan said.

“We’ll need to see but it doesn’t sound good though does it? You’ve got seven days to get ready it’s probably unlikely that he’s going to play.”
