Samantha Stosur has lost to Sofia Kenin in three sets in the final of the Guangzhou Open in China.
Third-seeded American Kenin has come back from losing a first set tiebreak to win 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-2 for her third WTA singles title of the year.
Kenin won her first singles crown of 2019 on the hardcourts of Hobart in January, and added her second on grass in June in Mallorca.
Stosur, who won the US Open in 2011, was looking for her first WTA title since Strasbourg in 2017.
The 35-year-old Stosur, a wildcard in Guangzhou, had progressed on Friday to her first singles final in two-and-a-half years, the 2011 US Open champion coming from behind to beat Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in three sets.
In Japan, at the Toray Pan Pacific tournament, top seed and last year’s US Open champion Naomi Osaka progressed to the final, beating Elise Mertens 6-4 6-1.
Osaka will play Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who defeated German former world No.1 Angelique Kerber 6-3 6-3.
At the Korea Open in Seoul, Yafan Wang beat Karolina Muchova 7-6 (7-5) 6-4. In the final, she will face fourth-seeded Magda Linette of Poland. Linette beat second-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (9-7).
