Doubters lift Giants into AFL grand final

Jeremy Cameron has one message for all those who hated, doubted or just generally dismissed GWS – thank you.

As Cameron and his Giants teammates prepare for Saturday’s AFL grand final against Richmond, the key forward says the club’s lack of love outside Sydney’s west has been a big motivating factor for him and his teammates.

Last weekend’s four-point win over Collingwood in front of a packed MCG without key players such as Toby Greene (suspended), Lachie Whitfield (appendix), Stephen Coniglio (knee) or Brett Deledio (calf) was a case in point of the Giants standing tall against hostility.

“There wasn’t too many people on our side but I think that drives you as a club,” Cameron said.

“Having Lids (Deledio) and hearing his journey and then having him go down injured in that first game but doing everything he can for the team in that game. It’s just little things like that drive you.

“Toby’s been thrown around a lot in the last couple of weeks and he couldn’t be out there on the weekend. That drives us as a club.

“Mummy’s (Shane Mumford) coming up against the best ruckman in the comp basically and everyone writes him off. That only drives him as well. We’ve been using that to our advantage.”

Ridiculed in their early years as they copped some frightful beatings, the Giants’ rise to premiership threat has come with criticism for an overly physical brand of footy.

Cameron is once again unapologetic, believing the team’s style is a reflection of the competitiveness and will-to-win throughout the squad.

“In big games you’ve got to have a point of difference I guess,” the 2019 Coleman Medallist said.

“For us, it’s been our attack on the ball and going after, chasing them finals wins.

“(When you) come out and play the way we have, it’s been massive for the club and it shows that it holds in the big moments and we were able to do that again on the weekend.”
