Miss Siska ready to go in G2 Stocks Stakes

Trainer Grahame Begg is convinced Miss Siska has taken the necessary improvement since her season return to make her mark in the Group Two Stocks Stakes at The Valley.

Begg is planning to head to Friday night’s Stocks Stakes (1600m) for mares with Miss Siska, who has also been nominated for Sunday’s Underwood Stakes.

Miss Siska, a half-sister to former star sprinter Hay List, was beaten half a length when second to Spanish Whisper in the Group Two Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on September 14, indicating to Begg she was on target for a good campaign.

“She does run well fresh but just knowing how she looked going into the race, I knew there was a lot more to come,” Begg said.

“She was very wintry in the coat and had a lot of improvement in her.

“She has certainly made significant improvement since and there’s still a bit more to come.

“She’s definitely heading in the right direction.”

Begg took Miss Siska to The Valley for a familiarisation gallop on Monday and was thrilled how the mare worked.

“She got around The Valley well for a big horse,” he said.

“She cornered well and really put a bit of effort into her final 400 metres.”

Miss Siska was narrowly beaten when fourth in the Coolmore Legacy Stakes at Group One level for fillies and mares during the Sydney autumn carnival and the Group One Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on November 2 is a target.

Another Group One race could also figure in her program.

“She would have to run again before the Empire Rose Stakes so if she came out and won, there’s a chance she might run in the Toorak Handicap with 52 kilos on her back or something like that,” Begg said.

Miss Siska heads the early Stocks Stakes odds at $2.60 ahead of Princess Jenni at $5, with acceptances taken on Wednesday for the meeting which is headlined by the Group One Moir Stakes.
