Glencadam Gold still a Melbourne Cup hope despite hoof issue

Glencadam Gold missed trackwork on Tuesday because of a hoof issue but trainer Gai Waterhouse says the Group One-winning stayer is on target to run in the Melbourne Cup.

Waterhouse denied the Metropolitan winner had suffered a setback despite the presence of some heat in a hind hoof.

She said rather than work Glencadam Gold on the course proper with a number of other Melbourne Cup 2012 and Derby Day prospects, the import was sent for swim.

“I’ve sent him to the beach this morning and to the pool,” Waterhouse said.

“He’s a very fit horse. He’s been in work a long time.”

Glencadam Gold pieced together four wins, including an all-the-way victory in the Metropolitan at Randwick, in his first four starts for Waterhouse after arriving from England.

He was sent out favourite to win the Caulfield Cup but compounded after leading.

Jim Cassidy rode Glencadam Gold at Caulfield but Metropolitan-winning jockey Tommy Berry is booked to be reunited with the horse.
