Tomljanovic crashes out of Tianjin Open

Australian No.2 Ajla Tomljanovic has crashed out of the Tianjin Open in China, going down in disappointing fashion to Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova in the opening round.

World No.50 Tomljanovic lost 6-4 6-2 as she struggled on serve, being broken four times and winning only 51 per cent of points on her service game to a player who is ranked five places above her.

Chinese second seed Wang Qiang led a host of home players into the second round with victory over Australia’s Arina Rodionova 6-3 6-4 .

There were also first-round wins for Zheng Saisai, Peng Shuai, Wang Xinyu and Wang Xiyu.

Dayana Yastremska prevented a Chinese clean sweep, beating Zhu Lin 6-2 6-3, and Magda Linette was a 6-3 6-1 winner over Christina McHale.

Australian wildcard Samantha Stosur will play her second round match against sixth-seeded Kazakh Yulia Putintseva on Wednesday.
