Greenberg urges NRL stars to avoid trouble

NRL boss Todd Greenberg has told players to simply walk away from trouble as the investigation into Nelson Asofa-Solomona’s Bali brawl continues.

The NRL are expected to make a call on Asofa-Solomona’s fate next week, as the Melbourne prop’s Kiwi Test jersey hangs in the balance.

The footage appearing to show the 23-year-old throw several punches outside a restaurant has split opinion across the game.

It has since emerged that Melbourne teammate Suliasi Vunivalu was allegedly hit by a man before the altercation, sparking Asofa-Solomona’s actions.

Cronulla star Andrew Fifita this week claimed he would have acted the same way had a teammate been hit, adding he would go “all out” and that it was “common sense”.

But asked about those comments and how players should react if a teammate is struck, Greenberg’s message was blunt.

“Make good decisions,” he said.

“And if you’re in a situation like that where there is trouble brewing, walk away.

“Take yourself out of that situation. And make very smart choices particularly late at night. That is my advice to players.”

Regardless of the detail, the incident is a black eye the game did not need after last summer’s off-season from hell.

However Greenberg was confident the NRL wouldn’t face the same issues again after the no-fault stand-down policy was brought in for players charged with serious offences.

“I think every single player who puts on an NRL jersey is acutely aware of their responsibility,” he said.

“We can’t have a repeat of what we saw last year.

“Players will know if they make poor errors of judgment or poor decisions there is going to be significant consequences for those.

“And I think every player is acutely aware of that.”

Meanwhile Vunivalu was a notable absentee during the launch in Sydney but is expected to join his teammates later in the week.

But despite images of him sporting numerous cuts to the face being published by News Corp, the winger is still expected to play for Fiji at the Nines this weekend.

“All the boys have messaged him. He knows he’s loved. All the boys love him to death, so all we can do now is be there for him,” said Fiji hooker Api Koroisau.
