WHAT HAPPENED IN PART TWO OF THE 2019 AFL DRAFT
* With the first round done and dusted on Wednesday night, the draft continued at Marvel Stadium on Thursday evening, with Brisbane kicking off the second round with the 22nd overall pick, which was also their first call at the draft.
* The Lions swooped on All-Australian midfielder Deven Robertson after acquiring that selection in a trade with Port Adelaide, who picked up Brisbane’s No.23 selection as well as a future second-rounder.
* Collingwood, Essendon, North Melbourne, St Kilda and West Coast also made their first selections of the draft on Thursday night after trading away their first-round picks.
* A year after stealing academy prospect Irving Mosquito from Hawthorn, Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro sent Brisbane scrambling with an early bid for Keidean Coleman from their academy. The draft was held up for several minutes while the Lions swung a trade with Sydney to match the bid.
* But the Lions lost two academy products soon after when they chose not to match Richmond’s bids for Noah Cumberland and Will Martyn.
* Geelong talent guru Stephen Wells is noted for his ability to pick a smoky and he did it again, plucking forward Francis Evans out of the Victorian amateur league’s second division with the 41st pick.
* Father-son nominees Jackson Mead and Finn Maginness found their way to Port Adelaide and Hawthorn respectively. The Power secured the son of Darren with No.25 and the Hawks nabbed Scott’s lad at No.29.
* Brisbane had hoped Lachlan Johnson, son of triple-premiership player Chris, would get through to the rookie draft, but Essendon pounced at 63.
* On the back of a busy trade period, St Kilda was the last club to enter the draft, the Saints picking up Sandringham midfielder Ryan Byrnes 52nd overall.
* Adelaide, Gold Coast and Richmond picked the most players at the draft with five and West Coast and St Kilda each picked the fewest with just two.
* The last player picked in the national draft was Thomas Hutchesson from Adelaide’s SANFL squad, who joined the Giants with the 65th overall selection.
